Who We Are

On March 1, 2014, the San Francisco SPCA and Pets Unlimited merged, creating a centralized animal care nonprofit that significantly increases organizational resources and enhances operations for the benefit of animals in the San Francisco Bay Area. By joining together, our like minded nonprofit organizations can better support our community and the animals that we serve.

As a result of the merger, we are committed to increased adoptions, expanded charity care, improved customer service and expanded volunteer opportunities among other increased efficiencies.  For additional information, please visit our merger page and learn more about our integrated Leadership team.

Pets Unlimited continues to have a wonderful Adoption Center and world-class Veterinary Hospital. Please visit!

Our History

Pets Unlimited was born from the selfless acts of Mrs. Carter H. Downing in 1940’s San Francisco. When a scruffy, stray dog wandered into her yard, Mrs. Carter H. Downing did what any good citizen would do. She took the dog to the city pound. But she soon learned that the dog’s chances for survival were slim. Wayward pets were euthanized after only a few days unless adopted quickly.

Mrs. Downing decided to take the dog back home with her. Then she did more – she also took all the other dogs at the pound! Along with two other civic leaders, she quickly began her own impromptu adoption service, which proved amazingly successful at finding loving homes for animals in need.

Who We Are

Pets Unlimited was born from the selfless acts of Mrs. Carter H. Downing to save the life of Scruffy, a homeless dog she found in her backyard in 1940’s San Francisco.

Today, more than 65 years later, we are committed to providing your pet with compassionate care in our Veterinary Hospital while furthering Mrs. Downing's mission to find homes for more dogs and cats like Scruffy in our Adoption Center.
