SUMMARY
The RVT1 should be proficient in all the basic skills required of veterinary technicians. The RVT1 should be a self-starter that can recognize and anticipate the needs of a busy treatment room. They should be proficient in all areas of nursing with the exception of sedation, anesthesia, surgery and dental procedures. An RVT1 is expected to begin additional training in sedation, anesthesia, sedation, surgical assisting and dental procedures at the end of the probationary period.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- To handle all animals humanely, properly and with compassion, including those that may be sick, injured or feral
- To always treat people and animals with respect; to contribute to effective teamwork and practice direct communication
- To follow established procedures governing safe work practices including wearing protective clothing or equipment when necessary
- To maintain healthy, safe, sanitary, pleasant and clean facilities by participating in cleaning and maintaining the housekeeping duties checklists
- To assist in the maintenance and inventory of supplies by doing laundry, restocking the treatment room and surgery suites as needed and notifying the Technician Supervisor if supplies are low
- To anticipate the doctors’ needs and assist with all duties including creating treatment sheets, making estimates and entering charges in addition to treatments and procedures
- To clean, pack and sterilize surgical and dental instruments
- To perform venipunture including placement of peripheral IV catheters and maintenance of all types of IV catheters
- To professionally examine, handle and treat out-patients at the direction of the veterinarian
- To perform treatments, monitor progress and take responsibility for the care of medically boarding animals and routine post-op hospitalized patients
- To perform routine treatments on critical patients
- To assist the surgical and dental technicians with prepping patients for anesthesia and induction including placement of IV catheters, administering pain medications and performing pre-op blood work as requested
- To care for post-anesthesia patients and monitor their recovery including extubation, temperature management and pain management
- To take responsibility for ensuring tech appointments are completed in a timely manner
- To administer vaccines appropriately using the double check system
- To take and evaluate quality of radiographs while using proper technique to minimize radiation exposure
- To perform client demonstrations for administering medications to out-patients in a patient and professional manner
- To assist in lab and pharmacy duties as requested
- To assist in rooming doctor appointments and emergencies as needed
- To discharge hospitalized patients and explain discharge instructions to clients in a clear, friendly and professional manner
- To triage patients for emergency or routine visits at the request of the client, CSR staff, veterinarian or Vet Tech Supervisor
- To admit hospitalized patients including medical boarders by following proper procedure
- To accurately process client paperwork and charge out accounts as needed
- To maintain patient records by accurately recording treatments and test results in patient charts, computerized records and logbooks as needed
- To assist Client Services personnel whenever necessary to assure smooth, courteous handling of the public and their pets
- To assist in maintaining hospital equipment by performing weekly maintenance for assigned equipment
- To assist Vet Tech Supervisors in maintaining the parameters of the Hospital budget by caring for equipment properly and minimizing waste of hospital supplies
- Work to improve skills as assigned and directed by the Vet Tech Supervisors and Training Coordinator
- To use the Pets Unlimited Core Values as a guide for behavior and when making decisions and addressing problems

Education and Experience
- Completion of an accredited Veterinary Technician program or completion of the equivalent alternate route. (VA1: At least 3 years college education with an emphasis in science and math. One year of comparable work experience may be substituted for each year of education)
- Be licensed as a Registered Veterinary Technician in the State of California

SUMMARY
The RVT2 is a senior technician role. The RVT2 is responsible for the care of large groups of patients including ICU, Surgery or Dental as assigned. The RVT2 will routinely participate in long surgery or dental cleaning days where independent time management and troubleshooting are required. The RVT2 should be a good leader and set a good example for attitude, commitment and professionalism in the treatment room. The RVT2 may be asked to fill a charge nurse role on days that a supervisor is not present.

SUMMARY
The purpose of this position is to assist the veterinary technicians with entry level duties in order to promote efficiency of the treatment room. Tech assistants should take direction from the veterinary technicians, the vet tech supervisors or the doctors. The intention of the outlined duties is to provide a guideline indicating which duties a TA may perform, not to provide an exhaustive list. Additional duties may be assigned as training progresses. This is the entry level technician position at Pets Unlimited.
