Veterinary Assistant II

We are currently hiring for an experienced Veterinary Assistant, Level II. Registered Veterinary Technicians are highly preferred. This is a full time position.

Duties of this position include:

  • To be available to assist the veterinarians on duty at all times

  • Advanced venipuncture including placing IV catheters in critical patients, placing long saphenous sampling catheters and training to place jugular catheters

  • To take radiographs as directed by veterinarian, and to log and document radiographs properly

  • To process in-house and outgoing lab samples, fill pharmacy prescriptions and restock pharmacy as needed

  • To clean and sterilize surgical instruments and packs

  • To assist in surgery, perform dentals including xrays, and monitor anesthesia during procedures

  • To monitor and extubate post-surgical patients

  • To maintain patient records by accurately recording treatments and test results in patient charts, computerized records and logbooks as needed.

  • To care for, monitor and administer medication to hospitalized patients; primarily patients in ICU

  • To process client paperwork and charge out accounts as needed

Qualifications

  • College education with an emphasis in science and math. 

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.  At least 3 years work experience as a veterinary technician. RVT strongly preferred.

  • Ability to communicate in a professional, pleasant, respectful and courteous manner at all times

  • Maturity, good judgment and professional personal appearance

  • Ability to lift and move objects and animals weighing up to 50 pounds for short distances and to humanely restrain an animal when necessary.

  • Proficiency in emergency care techniques including venipuncture, IV and urinary catheters, and CPR

  • Proficiency in anesthesia including induction, intubation, monitoring, extubation and ability to perform CPR during a surgical procedure

  • Skill and proficiency at monitoring animals on oxygen including placement of nasal oxygen cannulas

  • Proficiency in all laboratory and pharmacy duties including reading and analyzing fecal samples and urine samples

  • Proficiency in all radiographic techniques including troubleshooting skills, barium studies, met checks and use of radio-opaque materials

  • Proficiency in math; ability to calculate injectable medication doses, administer them properly and calculate CRI’s

  • Ability to perform dentals including extractions, flaps and suturing techniques

  • Knowledge of blood transfusing techniques including cross-matching, blood typing, monitoring transfusions and treating reactions as needed

  • Excellent client communication skills; ability to answer advice calls

Registered Veterinary Technician

Pets Unlimited, a non-profit Veterinary Hospital and Shelter located in the beautiful Pacific Heights Area, provides exceptional general practice and emergency veterinary medicine as well as dentistry and holistic medicine. Our AAHA-accredited hospital operates 24 hours per day, every day of the year. Our 16 veterinarians, technical medical staff, and client services team handles over 40,000 visits per year.

Currently the Hospital has several open positions for Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVT) and for experienced Veterinary Technicians working various shifts. A specific need exists on our 5PM -3AM shift but other shifts are also available. Emergency/Critical care experience is required.
