SUMMARY

The Controller is a member of the Pets Unlimited Leadership Team and is responsible for execution of all financial and accounting initiatives including: financial management, accounting functions, internal controls, grant management and reporting, financial reporting and planning, budgeting, banking, taxes, and an annual external audit. This position currently oversees 1.5 FTE who provide support with A/P, A/R and payroll. This position reports to the Executive Director and has regular interaction with clients, colleagues on the Management Team and the Board of Directors. This position requires a highly motivated and skilled professional who is seeking an opportunity to learn and grow in a supportive team environment. The ideal candidate for this position will have skill and experience working as both a leader and in a hands-on capacity.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Managerial Duties
    • Manage the Finance and Accounting department by utilizing a positive and collaborative team-oriented approach.
    • Lead the creation of a complex $10 million annual organizational budget by working collaboratively with members of the Management team.
    • Manage and ensure annual audit and timely filing of tax returns and other pertinent documents.
    • Provide support to all team members to guide and ensure that they are knowledgeable and comfortable managing within budget guidelines and financial procedures throughout the organization.
    • Collaborate with the Operations Manager on the Workers Compensation Program.
    • Collaborate with the Executive Director and the Human Resource Specialist on the purchase and administration of the Employee Benefits Programs.
    • Conducts performance evaluations for direct reporting staff.
  • Administrative Duties
    • Responsible for monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for management, board and other outside entities to review.
    • Develop and maintain financial reporting calendar.
    • Attend and participate in staff meetings, new employee orientations, work groups, task forces, committees and Board of Trustee meetings as required.
    • Produce written reports such as the monthly Board of Trustee Report and on an as needed basis.
  • Leadership Duties
    • Involved in strategic planning, including developing organizational policies and procedures in accordance with the organization’s Core Values. 
    • Develop and maintain policies and procedures that support efficient processes throughout the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • At least five years of relevant work experience, including at least two years of management experience in nonprofit finance and accounting.
  • Possess the utmost personal integrity
  • Ability to work effectively in a team oriented environment.
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written. Ability to communicate professionally with non-financial and  financially sophisticated team members, including clients, staff, volunteers, and trustees
  • Excellent judgment and analytical abilities to anticipate and promptly address organizational needs
  • Skill in operating or ability to learn the various software programs utilized by Pets Unlimited, including Impromed Infinity, Sage MIP Accounting software, MS Office, Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and at times stressful work environment, utilizing good time and project management skills.
  • Must be able to organize and execute policies and procedures as planned while maintaining flexibility.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree with an emphasis on business or financial management preferred
  • 5+ years experience in non-profit finance and accounting
  • 2+ years experience in supervising staff

Hours: Full-time, exempt position. Daily reporting hours and days of the week vary according to the business needs of the department. May include nighttime, weekend and holiday work.
