Most pet owners will encounter some kind of behavioral problem throughout the life of their pet. A large percentage of these problems can be resolved with support from an expert in animal learning and behavior, and most can be managed successfully if not fully resolved. Behavior problems are one of the most common reasons that pets are euthanized or surrendered to shelters. This is an unfortunate reality that Pets Unlimited sees everyday, as a Veterinary Center that supports a Shelter and Adoption Center.
We believe behavioral wellness is just as important as your pet’s physical well-being, and are now pleased to offer a comprehensive program that will provide owners the tools and information needed to cultivate and maintain your pet’s behavioral wellness, as well as address behavior problems that are currently an issue.
Our Philosophy & Approach
The Pets Unlimited approach to behavior modification and training utilizes contemporary, science-based methods involving animal learning theory, positive motivational techniques, and relationship-building between you and your pet. We do not use nor recommend training methods that manipulate your pet through fear, pain, intimidation, or “dominance.” Instead, our consultants coach pet owners in methods that are both pet-friendly and owner-friendly, resulting in a stress-free and healthy relationship for all involved.
Our Behavior Consultant
Our behavior consultant brings nearly 10 years of experience in cat and dog care, behavior modification, and training to Pets Unlimited. Shelley is supported in all training plans by our team of skilled veterinarians, and ready to help you and your pet build the very best relationship possible.
Shelley Smith, CTC, Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed
Shelley Smith joined Pets Unlimited’s shelter team in May 2007. Always a pet guardian, she has worked with both cats and dogs in a shelter setting since 2004. After graduating from the SF/SPCA Academy for Dog Trainers, she began working with dogs in a private consultation setting. Never able to stray too far from shelter cats and dogs, she currently selects animals in need for Pets Unlimited’s Adoption Program as well as developing behavior modification plans for shelter animals when needed. She also maintains the shelter’s Kitten Foster Program, which helps save the lives of underage kittens that often need special care. She has a strong interest in canine and feline enrichment programs, helping to provide the best life possible for the animals she works with. She lives in San Francisco with her cats, all previous shelter residents.
