Saffron House
HAPPY, HEALTHY, AND FIV POSITIVE
90% of cats that test positive for FIV lead long, healthy lives when they live in homes were they're well loved and well cared for.
-
FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), also
known as Feline AIDS, is a virus that may eventually suppress the immune
system of the carrier cat.
-
There is no cure for FIV, but the majority
of FIV positive cats will lead relatively long, healthy lives if they
receive excellent care in a loving home.
-
FIV is spread through blood to blood or
saliva to blood contact. The primary means of spreading this virus is
through deep bite wounds, as the virus must directly enter the
bloodstream in order to potentially infect another cat.
-
Although FIV can infect any cat, it is
most often found in adult unneutered male cats over 6 years of age who
spend a lot of time outdoors fighting with other cats.
-
FIV is not easily transmitted through
casual contact between cats. Everyday cat activities like mutual
grooming or sharing food bowls and litter boxes will not transmit the
virus.
-
Because we do not want to risk the
transmission of the virus to uninfected cats, we recommend FIV positive
cats either be the only cat in the household or live amongst other FIV
positive companions.
-
FIV positive cats must be indoor only cats
to prevent the transmission of the virus to uninfected cats they may
encounter if they went outdoors.
-
FIV is not contagious to people, dogs, or
other non-feline pets.
